Turning Flip Flop pollution into Art to promote Conservation of our Oceans
Research shows that three billion pairs of flip flops are purchased globally each year. Cheaply made, these items wear out quickly, are tossed into our landfills to eventually end up floating in our oceans and covering our beaches. Along with other ocean plastics, pieces of discarded flip flops are mistaken for food, and eaten by marine animals and birds, resulting in the death of millions annually.
One creative initiative in Kenya is raising awareness of this environmental crisis and making a difference in the fight for healthy oceans - literally turning garbage into art. In 2017 alone over 520,000 salvaged old flip flops were cleared from local beaches. Once collected they are cleaned, made into multi-coloured blocks and then hand carved into beautiful creatures and whimsical sculptures, supporting the community through fair trade and reliable employment for talented artisans and locals.
